4th Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series 2017

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

The Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians, Inc. (PAARL) will be holding its 4th Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series 2017 with the topic “Data Privacy in the Age of the Internet and its implications in Libraries” on 15 September 2017, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, at the SMX Convention Center (Meeting Rooms 2 & 3), Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City, Metro Manila.

The lecture series, named in honor of our founding president Ms. Marina G. Dayrit, aims to provide a fertile learning environment for new ideas and enlightened discussions among library and information professionals in the country.

With the passing into law of the Republic Act 10173, also known as the “Data Privacy Act of 2012,” intended to protect the privacy of individuals while ensuring free flow of information to promote innovation and growth, it is important to know how its various manifestations might impact our lives and the services we provide within and outside our libraries.

This lecture will primarily focus on: 1) the effects and power of the Internet and various web technologies in accessing data of people and using it for policy and decision-making; 2) the structure of the Data Privacy Act of 2012 and its implementing rules and regulations; 3) the limits in accessing data under the Philippine Constitution and the law; and 4) how libraries should protect the confidentiality of all matters relating to information users, including their inquiries and any aspects of their personal circumstances or business.

Registration starts at 12:00 pm. Members will be assessed a registration fee of Php300 and Php350 for non-members. Students may avail of a discounted rate of Php200.

Due to limited space in the seminar venue, we will accept participants on a first-come, first-served basis. We therefore encourage all interested participants to come and register promptly at the registration desk on the above-mentioned schedule.

Thank you and we look forward to your participation in this activity.

3rd Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series 2017

The Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians, Inc. (PAARL) will be holding its 3rd Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series 2017 with the theme “Digital Preservation in Libraries” on 30 June 2017, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, at the 5th Floor, Study Area, Rizal Library, Ateneo de Manila University, University Rd., Quezon City, 1108 Metro Manila.

The lecture series, named in honor of our founding president Ms. Marina G. Dayrit, aims to provide a fertile learning environment for new ideas and enlightened discussions among library and information professionals in the country.

Digital resources in libraries, whether digitized or born-digital, are growing at an exponential rate, which raises the concern towards preservation of these resources for future use. Librarians and information professionals are therefore faced with the challenge of developing measures and adopting solutions to address the constant growth of digital information that demands long-term preservation, and of choosing the appropriate technology and storage hardware and media to use to ensure persistent preservation and access to these digital entities.

This lecture aims to educate and familiarize librarians and information professionals with the concept of digitization and digital preservation and help them develop a persistent and sound digital preservation program. Specifically, it intends to help librarians and information professionals:

  • Identify and understand the necessary hardware, software, and the core skills and expertise needed in implementing an in-house digitization program;
  • Learn the issues and challenges in implementing digitization and digital preservation programs;
  • Learn from best practices of other libraries with previous or existing digitization and/or digital preservation programs/projects; and
  • Choose the best technology, solution, and approach to adopt for their libraries’ digitization and long-term digital preservation program.

Registration starts at 8:00 am. Members will be assessed a registration fee of Php300 and Php350 for non-members. Students may avail of a discounted rate of Php200.

Pre-registration is required to help facilitate arrangements with the venue. Online registration form is available at https://tinyurl.com/PAARL3rdMGDLS.

2nd Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series 2017

The Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians, Inc. (PAARL) will be holding its 2nd Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series 2017 with the topic “Libraries and the Internet of Things” on 30 March 2017, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, at the Asian Institute of Management, 123 Paseo de Roxas, Legazpi Village, Makati City.

The lecture series, named in honor of our founding president Ms. Marina G. Dayrit, aims to provide a fertile learning environment for new ideas and enlightened discussions among library and information professionals in the country.

The “Internet of Things” (IoT) is a network of smart objects containing embedded technologies that communicate and interact with their physical environment. IoT is an emerging area, and several possible services and innovations may become available as a result of an increasingly interconnected networked environment. It is therefore important to know how its various manifestations might impact our lives and the services we provide within and outside our libraries.

This lecture aims to educate and familiarize librarians and information professionals with the Internet of Things and how these technologies can be beneficial to libraries. Specifically, it intends to help librarians and information professionals:

  • Learn and understand the different IoT devices, tools, and applications that can be implemented or adopted to enrich the services of libraries or enhance the experiences of library users; and
  • Learn the issues and challenges in using IoT in libraries, such as, but not limited to, personal privacy and security of data, cost of investment in IoT technologies, required training and infrastructure, data collection and transmission standards, and other technical challenges.

Registration starts at 8:00 am. Members will be assessed a registration fee of Php300 and Php350 for non-members. Students may avail of a discounted rate of Php200.

Thank you and we look forward to your participation in this activity.

1st Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series 2017 (lecture available for download here)

The Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians, Inc. (PAARL) will be holding its 1st Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series 2017 with the topic “Using Big Data to Enhance Library Services” on 03 March 2017, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Proctor and Gamble Audiovisual Room, 5th Floor, Melchor Hall (College of Engineering), University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

The lecture series, named in honor of our founding president Ms. Marina G. Dayrit, aims to provide a fertile learning environment for new ideas and enlightened discussions among library and information professionals in the country.

Information organization, management, communication, and research are the key skills librarians possess. It has been the role of librarians to analyze and interpret the specific information needs of their users and determine what information sources would satisfy those inquiries. This has changed however with the rise of “Big Data” and the emergence of new technologies and tools that help librarians organize and make sense of this avalanche of data. Now, librarians must also be able to provide the same level of service to data as they do to other formats of information. This lecture aims to educate and familiarize librarians with "Big Data" and how these will impact their institution’s academic research and libraries. Specifically, it intends to help librarians and information professionals:

  • Understand how "Big Data" can be used to better serve their patrons and academic institutions;
  • Determine the skills needed to study and analyze "Big Data" to help make data-informed decisions about information resources, systems, and services; and
  • Learn the issues and challenges in using "Big Data" in libraries, such as, but not limited to, data privacy, data standards, access and usability issues, lack of Data Scientist, analysis tools to use, and other technical challenges.

Registration starts at 8:00 am. Members will be assessed a registration fee of Php300 and Php350 for non-members. Students may avail of a discounted rate of Php200.
